Summer trip 2019
So started our summer trip and travelled from va to Colorado Springs on thurs/Friday. Attempted Pikes Peak on Saturday, got a quick weather front rolling in and started raining at base camp, around 10000 feet, turned to sleet and by 12000 feet, the climb was a treacherous icy slush. When the car infront of me started panicking and slip sliding., found a spot to turn around and came down the mountain. The video was shot by my wife around 11k elevation before it got really bad. No wonder, I was the only dumbass biker on the mountain.

So we try again on Sunday, starts as a beautiful day and of course the ranger at the gate says nothing and we start the climb. The mountain got a few inches of snow and the road froze near the peak and was closed to all traffic about a 1/4 mile from the summit. We still had a great ride and got a quick hike in on a snow covered trail.

Then we headed to Cripple Creek from Manitou Springs. Its a great ride and you cross over a mountain pass around 11000 feet. The town itself is at 9500 feet elevation and has lots of old west mining history. All in all Sunday was a pretty eventful day where in typical June Colorado weather, we got to ride in bright sunshine, pelting rain and hail all in a matter of hours. Monday, we headed to Farmington, New Mexico and plan to ride around the 4 corners region for the next 5 days.

Here is the route we took today. Started from Farmington, NM at 830 am and rode up to Silverton and stopped at the Harley dealer there. From there we continued on 550 to Ouray (that's the section of 550 from Silverton to Ouray that's called the million dollar highway because way back when they built it, it cost a million dollars/mile). Continued to RIdgeway and then took 62 to CO145 to Telluride and had lunch there. From Telluride, continued on 145 into Dolores and then picked up 160 in Cortez and continued on 493 to shiprock and took 64 back to Farmington. Rolled into the hotel at 630 pm. Every section was spectacular and different. Had great weather and rain/sleet for 60 miles at one stretch. Had temps that ranged from 44 deg to 78!
