17 cvo 114 engine reliability
#11
I have had expensive problems on my 2007, 2009, 2013 and 2012 Harleys. I see no reason to believe that 2017 or 2018 will be any different.
I love my Harley, probably will never go back to non-Harley bikes. But it is kind of like a high maintenance woman. When it's running right and all cleaned up it is the best. When it ain't, ....well....it ain't.
My 12 CVO is in the shop now for a broken valve spring. My 2012 110 motor only has four valve springs. One broke.
The M8 has eight valve springs.......think about that!
LOL.

I know I have had two 110 motors have lifter failures, on bikes that were stock except head pipe and mufflers.
Factory springs have to much pressure.
At this point I still trust the M8 more than the 110. I have had four 110 bikes of which I still have one. I'm on the second M8 bike

It was an AV&V spring that broke 15,000 miles later. If the 110 was reliable I would have never sought to preemptively have the heads done.
My buddy is letting me ride his stock '13 Road King (103 cu in)with just over 7,000 miles on it. On a cold start, 60 degrees out, it taps for a minute or two until the lifter shakes loose. Gonna fail soon I'll bet.

Funny you should ask. I had my heads done by a reputable shop to avoid future problems with the valve train. He found busted guides, did the valves and installed AV&V springs.

Stock it seems its always the lifters.
My 110 has head work and AV&V springs, as does a good friends.
Has me concerned as I sure do not want to go back to HD spring set.

Dave,
Just a thought, when I first upgraded my motor to the SE Pro Race 117" Big Bore Kit. I know for a fact that I added AV&V .650 lift Beehive springs because I gave them to my builder. And ran them for about a year without any problems what so ever. (Jan 2016)
However when Don D. @ HDSP did my head work, I too thought he used AV&V Beehives. (Jan 2017)
But I do remember a conversation that we had regarding Beehives and that he was switching to Conical Vavle Springs.
Maybe by chance he used Conical Valve Springs for your CVO Road King?
I STILL feel that AV&V Beehive Valve Springs are good valve springs and many engine builders still use them without any problems. For sure better then stock 110" valve springs when combined with new bronze guides.
