Just a wandering thought but I wonder what the percentages are on sumped bikes that were using syn verse dino? Curious
Dan
SYN 3 isn't a full synthetic oil. It's name comes from the fact that it contains Group III hydrocracked oil from the ground. HD gets by with labeling it a full synthetic because of the Castrol lawsuit. With these new "oil cooled" engines where the oil is routed around one of the hottest parts of the head, there's no way in the world I'd use anything other than a true full synthetic oil. Not to mention HD is overcharging for a semi-synthetic oil.
The first oil sumping video is from a 2019 CVO RG. Its an air cooled bike so there is no source of water inside the engine to mix with the oil. All CVOs come with Syn3 from the factory and since the bike hasnt had its 1000mile service it likely has the same oil in it that was in it from the factory.

I received the bike from the dealer on Friday. They tell me it was missing a seal from behind oil pump from assembly at factory. I have a parts friend that saw pictures of my internals and he did confirm that for 2019 CVO they add an additional gasket/seal to oil pump assembly. Since I picked up Ive riden it medium hard for 487 miles and so far so good. Harley has done things to make me happy. Thank you for your comments

Hi Pepper,
So glad to hear that yours was fixed by HD. Could you keep us posted over the next few thousand miles?
Also, would you mind if I ask you when your bike was built? There was a talk of new parts from late-August 2018. Although your bikes issue was missing gasket, it might be helpful to keep a track of build dates.

Hey Pepper, did HD replace that engine for you or just the missing seal?
What makes the oil come out of the engine like that? Understand the heat causing it to boil and the pressure in the crankcase but how does the oil get out to the engine?

They had removed the crankshaft position sensor to see how much oil drains from the crankcase. Only a small amount should come out since it's a dry-sump oiling system.
Thanx strych9. Almost said something stupid like; "Was the engine running but stopped because that ain't gonna happen." That is a lot of oil and hot as can be. I'm gonna have to remember that trick.

Reason: can't spell
Yeah, they were caught by surprise as they were opening the crankcase. The oil was boiling so badly it sprayed the guy filming and burned the other tech opening the CPS. Pretty crazy stuff.
never seen a tech take a bike outside and let the pumped oil flow out in the grass
