I do not know exactly where the ignition coil was mounted on 1979, but a typical location is under the frame, at the very front, under the fuel tank. Do a Google search for 1979 sportster pictures.

Good question since virtually all electronic ignitions other than 1979 require use of a 3 ohm coil. The ignition coil for 1979 is a 5 ohm coil [tests between 4.5 and 5.7 if working] so it should work...
