FLH extended rear brake pedal??
With my floorboards and the pedal being pretty close to vertical at rest, I find myself exaggerating my foot and leg movements to apply the rear brakes. While it's not an issue on the back roads, I'm looking at highway riding and emergency stops. I don't want to find myself with my foot stuck under the brake pedal.
I was looking at mine today and thinking of just getting another brake pedal and cutting/bending and then welding and reinforcing to where I want it. Was just wondering, before I do that, if any knows of a good source (or even good pics) for a longer, less vertical rear brake pedal for a '77 FLH? Any help or info would be greatly appreciated! |
V-Twin 23-0351
Chrome Forward Brake Pedal allows driver better access to pedal from floorboard. Fits 1979-84 FLH Got it at Mas Classics Vintage American Motorcycle Parts https://www.masclassics.com/vtwin/0536.php Works very well, and it even has a grease fitting. |
Thanks a lot. Says its for 78-up but I'm sure I can make it work. Looks like what I was wanting.

I'm not sure what's different between 77 and 79.
I know what you mean about the awkward angle of the original pedal. |
I don't know what's different either but I'm going to order one and try it. I'll post up pics and info of what I find so others will have it.
|
I believe the difference is that in late 79 they changed the master cylinder from the old wagner style to the later rectangular model. The mounting holes are different and linkage.
|
I'm not wanting to change the master cylinder so I think it will be ok. The pedal pivot should be the same so as long as the rod will connect to the later model pedal, I'm hoping it'll work alright.

So, the 79-84 FLH rear brake pedal I ordered showed up today. Was hoping for a simple install but with my last name being Murphy; I should have known better. Lol.
https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.hdf...3150c2a1f3.jpg Here's how it started out with the OEM pedal. Very vertical and I found my foot trapped under it while riding. Not good in a panic situation. https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.hdf...e010392f18.jpg Old pedal and new pedal. The tabs are clocked at the same point, so you can see the added benefits already. https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.hdf...62ea4245b5.jpg Here was the first problem. The new pedal is thicker than the old one and when I put it on the pivot pin, the threads were flush with the outside edge of the new pedal. https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.hdf...48d27fc393.jpg Added benefit though, the new pedal came with replaceable bronze bushings. Downside, the bushings were the same diameter as the pivot shaft. https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.hdf...d81bee7acc.jpg Here you can see that I have removed the mounting plate and you can see the pivot shaft. Turns out, it was only swedged on the back from the factory. https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.hdf...d953213e70.jpg Ground the weld down and the popped the pivot shaft out with my H-beam press. Then, drilled the existing hole out to 5/8". Turns out a 5/8" bolt fits perfectly inside the new bronze bushings inside the new pedal. https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.hdf...12ed43776b.jpg Not really needed, but it was the only spacer my local hardware store had. Needed some kind of a spacer between the mounting plate and the new pedal to keep the master cylinder rod running straight into the master cylinder. https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.hdf...99e16eeead.jpg The finished product with the new pedal. |
Just what I needed
I just ordered one of these, based on Rkblues' info, and Crazy4ink's coverage here, for my '82 FLH. Mine ought to be a simple swap out, but if it isn't, I'll know what to do. Thanks! :icon_banana:

Last step?
I followed your process and everything worked out till the end. The original pedal has a tang that sticks out, this keeps the pedal from falling back. Hiw did you do that with the new pedal?
