Isolating the primary is better for your motor. It keeps all the clutch disc particles from pumping through the engine.
Here's a link on how to do it.

Hey guys quick question might be up your alley.
I have a 1977 FXE that has a working oiler. I replaced the primary gasket and a few ounces came out when I did. Now that the new gasket is in, should I add a few ounces of fresh motor oil to the primary so I do not start her out dry? I have the manual but does not reference this at all. What do the gurus think?
I have gone back and forth a dozen times on blocking it off tonight alone.
Thanks

With the stock system just check the dip stick in the oil tank. If its low add some oil. The oiler starts up immediately and puts a constant stream of oil on the primary. The primary only has a couple of ounces in it before it is drawn back to the filter and tank. The stock oiling system works fine. Change the oil often and it will last. The ribs in the bottom of the primary and the sump position keeps the gunk in the primary until you clean it out. The primary also has a magnetic drain plug that needs to be cleaned during an oil change.
Your bike your choice to change the oiling system. I've had mine stock for 45 years.

It's a matter of choice. I like the stock system and I've had the same bike for 42 years. Change the oil often and you will not have a problem. A leak in the primary may be an inconvenience and a mess but your chain will still get lubricated. Run low of oil in a sealed primary and in a few miles your tensor and chain will be shot.
I like the stock system also, but there have been many of my friends isolate their primaries or go belt drive.

A few months ago when I had my motor torn down to re-ring, valve job and trans worked on I converted to a semi wet primary even though I have a dry clutch setup. I remove the oil lines from the pump and running 6 oz of ATF in there as long as you don't have any leaks you don't have to worry about running dry. I mean it's common sense maintain it and it'll be fine I'm glad I did it..
