Second letter Is Wrong on Title Vin

Hello All,

johnjzjz 12-20-2015 08:26 PM

been down that road before i would wait say nothing - you can after they give you the title in your name blame them for a mistake the next time you register it, jersey is awful about papers and it worked for me - as long as the frame and engine match you can stensel trace the two correct and have that as your docks

What are the first and last characters in the VIN on the motor and frame?

According to my 1971–84 H-D FX Models parts catalog, the model designator for a 1974 FXE is 9D. If the bike is really a 1974 model then the last character in the VIN should be 4, meaning the VIN in full would be formatted similar to the following example: 9D12345H4.

On the title, if the second character is C then the title may be referring to an FX-1200—for example, 2C12345H4.

I think (not sure) that an SR-100 may be 6C?

On the motor and frame, G as the second character could indicate:
FXS-80 (7G) but that was a Low Rider 80ci and wouldn’t be 1974.
FXWG-80 (9G) but that was a 1980 model Wide Glide.
FLH-80 (3G) but that was an 80ci model and wouldn’t be 1974.

Can you post photos of the bike and of the VIN on the engine and frame please. Cover a few sequence characters in the VIN if you wish.
Eric

Hello All, I bought a 1974 FXE today and I was just running the vin number tonight to make sure everything is right. My question is on my title the second letter is a C which is a SR100. The motor and frame it is a G and that is right for a FXE. The reason I am asking is because I live in North Carolina and I bought the bike in South Carolina. The NCDMV is very very strick here so I don't know if they will catch this error on the title or not. Also on the title where the model is it has Unknown. This error has be on this title since 1974 and no one has caught it. Should I try and get this straighten out now or should I keep my mouth shut when DMV inspects the bike. The NCDMV here is VERY VERY tough!!!!

I know of someone with a 78 1/2 shovel that had the same exact problem and calif is strict with that too. I know he resolved it and got it registered. I will have to ask him what he did..if for nothing else my curiosity now lol

I've been down that road.. Don't say anything wait and see if they catch it.... It can turn into a major pain in the azz....

H-D VINs for 1974 model Shovelheads have a format similar to what I posted earlier: two characters for the model designator; five characters for the sequence portion; the letter H; and the number 4 for the model year.

But your sequence portion doesn’t have five characters; instead it has six characters: 189938. That is not good.

In one of my Harley-published booklets I found mention of 6G and it indicates an FXE-80 but that is an 80 cubic inch machine and therefore it couldn’t be 1974 because 80ci Shovels weren’t made until about 1978/79.

Things is not going good

I had this happen on a car title once. The KY title transfer form (VTR) is typically filled out by hand by the buyer and seller in ball point pen on the form's too small spaces. In this example, a G was written but simply misread and mistyped as a C by the DMV. I didn't even notice until my title came back in the mail. Years later when I sold the car I pointed it out to the Co Clerk. She recognized the obvious typo and simply made the correction with the transfer. In short, it's kinda obvious and really no biggie at all.
