Just purchased 1970 electra glide, new to forum
 

I am new to this forum and the shovelhead world. I have a 2003 Roadking and, could not pass up this recent shovelhead purchase.. I will find alot of good help here I'm sure. I will be looking for a good HD2D rebuild kit and I need a new diaphram cover as well for that carb. Thank you all in advance for your help. The bike has been sitting for 25 years, the tanks are spotless.. Any tips are MUCH appreciated. I cranked it a few times the other day and then a mess of oil spilled out all over the garage floor..

1970 electra glide 10,800 miles all orig.

First off welcome to the forum and nic score on the bike.

Puking oil is normal if they have been sitting a while, just put a pan under the rear of the tranny next time you try to start her you may get as much as a quart out of the crankcases.

Flush the tanks with clean gas a couple times then pull the petcock and clean the screen, oil change as it will have got some water from condensation and don't worry about it in the engine it will burn out when the bike comes up to temp.

Look at the wiring close the old ones still had some cloth covered wires and mice love to chew on them and make nests in odd areas.

Tires will need replacing, while they may look good they age harden and will be slick at first then start shedding rubber on you.

The old tillison's there isn't much to rebuild just the bowl gasket and maybe the float needle & seat. Unless it leaks I'd leave it be and see how she works as is they were pretty damn simple and durable.

thank you all. i could not pass up the deal on this bike. my H2D2 diaphram cover is all cracked and will definately need replaced. the bike only has 10,800 miles and is cleaning up very nicely.

Nice Find ! It is cleaning up nicely !

...and to add a bit more for your maintenance. Pull the primary cover and clean the clutch plates. They will be very sticky from sitting all that time.

Now is also a good time to replace your rubber hoses. They will leak sooner and not later.

Be mindful that the gaskets are going to be very dry and expect seepage from the the cylinders especially. But that is what winter is for.

This is all great info. thank you all again for all the help, I'm sure I will have many many questions to come. How do you recommend cleaning the clutch plates ?

Use Brake Klean on both the seel and fiber plates.

Also get a factory service manual as well as a factory parts manual. And a good idea is to take pics of stuff prior to taking them apart. Helps when you put it back together and you have an extra "something" laying around, or you are not entirely sure how the other "something" goes back together.

And noticed you have no battery. Get a sealed AGM type. They make them to the exact configuration of the lead-acid type. Sealed battery means no acid overflow problems leaking on your frame during hot summer days.

Do a search. You can download factory service manuals for free.

If you want a paper manual, they are not that expensive. It's the best money you will spend.
