Default How do you take this thing apart?

Been a long time since I dealt with one of these. I went FX style spin-on on most of my stuff but the FL I got has one of these in the oil tank. I thought it just pulled apart and you popped the old filter out and new one in.

OMG...this is funny. Looking at the picture I think I remember. You pop that clip off and the whole thing comes apart. Man, I'm getting old. Need to go try that later.

remove the clip and it comes apart, the drop in filter can replace it

That's the original style I still use. Pull the clip, take it apart, wash it out and reassemble with a new filter. Don't forget the gasket on top. I like this type because you can see what type of crap you are picking up. It gave me an early warning when a wrist pin bushing was failing. I bought a case of the original style filters for about a $1.00 a piece.

A shop owner friend used to order from Dixie Distributing and gave them to me for cost. Dixie once had the best prices on parts for vintage machines. Sorry to say the owner of Dixie died and his family sold the inventory to a liquidator.

The 72 got reborn with a new frame so I guess it is a 78fxs now. It still looks like an FLH.

Just out of curiosity, how much metal shaving could you see before that wrist pin was replaced? I'm gonna keep this one too because I like that idea of being able to see the filter.

On mine the wrist pin bushing spun in the rod cutting off oil to it The bushing is softer then the pin but I replaced them both when I took it apart. The filter was covered with bronze shavings. The same thing happened years earlier when the pinion nut backed off and started to wear on the cover bushing. I saw the bronze and went looking for the source.
