79 FLH-80 Static Timing

I have a new Dyna S ignition. I followed the static timing instructions and think I did it correctly but have a question on the timing marks.

When moving the flywheel counter-clockwise, the line shows in the timing window first as the front cylinder moves up, followed by a dot at TDC. Is the advance mark used because the piston will be at full compression by the time the spark ignites?

Thanks
Nick

advanced timing = first mark as its before TDC

I got her running today! The engine sounded good except for some slight backfiring. I'm going to check the timing again and plan to clean the carb.

sparkplugs will do that if part fouled

Since last post, I pulled the carb, checked the jet sizes, cleaned it, and threw a rebuild kit in it. I started the bike and it still was running rough. I checked the static timing again and it looked good. I added some advance and it seems to be running smoother now. I think the carb needs some tuning though. Carb has stock jetting (.066 main /.028 intermediate). Plugs are NGK B9EG.

Here is a short video of the bike idling:

When I rev it now, it is smooth and doesn't stumble.

its too lean 295 low speed and ,most shovels use a 70 main

Thanks. I'll try the jets.

I was itching to work on the bike though it was in the 30s. After doing some research on this site and web, I wanted to see if I can smooth out the idle, so I changed the timing by moving the advance mark (|) to the right side of the timing window hole, turning the advance mechanism to full, and moving the timing plate until the test light came on.

The idle seems to have smoothed out a little and my son commented that the bike was shaking as much.

I haven't tried bigger jets yet as suggested earlier as I haven't had a chance to order them yet.

I'd appreciate thoughts/feedback on how it's running. Thanks!

I also sprayed starting fluid near the base plat of the carb and didn't observe any change in idle, so looks like the carb is sealed well and not letting extra air in to the mix.

I pulled the carb and put in a 70 main and 295 intermediate jet. The bike fires right up and runs a lot better now at idle and when I roll on the throttle. No misses or backfiring. Thanks!
