Default Rotary top shift linkage .

I have posted this question on another forum and got several different answers that I couldn't get it to work out . I have always worked on my own bikes and always will , but in my younger days we always ran ratchet lid transmissions .
I have a rotary top transmission that I bought at a swap meet , it is missing all of the shift linkage , I understand the difference between FL and XL linkage , I will be using the aluminum primary with electric start .
I think I would like to use XL linkage since it will place the attaching point of the shift lever rod above the primary , I'm ok with the shift pattern being reversed .
The problem I'm having is finding all the parts to the linkage or an alternative to the linkage .
I don't have access to anything to create a square hole . What have you guys done , please share part numbers . On another forum a machine shop instructor made some levers in a limited experimental trial run , but I was unable to get one before he quite making them .
The used linkage is so expensive I'm ready to try and rebuild the ratchet top trans , but damn , I have never seen one get so F@$$ed up without breaking the case . I have a real good running S&S motor in it and like a drunkun fool I let my buddy take it for a spin ( lesson learned ) and of course he's broke and going through a divorce ( I guess thats why my guard was down ).
Anyway any suggestions ? advice ? I would sure appreciate it . I have to be real frugal these days which is why I'm trying to ask for your guys experience with chasing after these parts . I not doing a restore , I'm just trying to get the shovel back on the road and look clean .Thanks

The FL linkage is best...fewer parts means less slop.

You need one of each.
