Not meaning to step on anyone's toes here and I would love to know if I'm wrong or not. Looking at the pictures it looks more like an flh to me instead of an flt.

Not your standard FLH. Quick giveaways are the 5-speed transmission, outer primary and the location of the oil filler

Ok. Thanks for the clarification. I'm not very well schooled on the older stuff. Regardless the op has a sweet looking ride

I had a peanut tank off of a '72 that was rustier than the titanic. I dumped an old coffee can full of random nuts, bolts, and screws in to the tank with just soapy water. Shook the hell out of it throughout the period of a few days periodically rinsing it out and adding new water and soap. It was unbelievable how well it worked. After that I experimented with the A and B prep agents from a Kreem kit that I had already and followed the directions provided. The tank was like brand new. I did not use the sealer. I just filled the tank with gas and it was good to go.

Thanks for the input everyone. I did the first step of the POR-15 which is just a degreaser and the tank is like night and day difference. It seems like what I was looking at what just the old sludge the hung around after I drained it. I can see very little surface rust in some spots though. Should I try the nut/bolt method to try and knock that stuff loose instead of continuing on with the complete re seal?

your not going to hurt anything by taking that step. if it helps you sleep better knowing you cleaned it, then do it.
