No matter if the engine in the bike is an Evo...

You will get more knowledge on that starter configuration right here in the Shovelhead section...

The starter drive gear (bendix) is not the cause of this problem.

The problem is that the drive gear is not being retracted from the starter ring gear.

As V twins said, the problem can be caused by a weak battery, or bad electrical connections.

The first thing to do is remove the battery, charge it fully and then have it load tested.

While battery is out, clean all battery, starter solenoid and starter motor cable connections.

Here`s a safety note for anyone not familiar with this starter configuration:

Do not pull on the starter drive gear when battery is connected, doing so will energize the starter motor. It does not matter whether the ignition switch is on or not.

the batt is good, connections are good, everything seems to be connected right. I was wondering about the relay witch I have tried two and both do the same, What if the spring is weak on the solenoid? the one that is inside the arm and plundger or whatever its called?

Have you disconnected and cleaned all the connections, including the ground wire, battery to starter bolt?

it's wired backwards on the solenoid. You have 2 large post 1 is long the other is short the long go to the battery the short go to the starter it MUST be wired this way or as soon as you hit the switch it'll stay turning till you disconnect the battery

You might consider checking the starter relay. You can eliminate this as a cause by using a jumper wire directly to the starter solenoid. If the bike starts and starter disengages, it's the relay.

Good luck
