Smaller tank on a big twin shovel frame ideas
I love the design and look of the shovelhead engine. I currently have the fat bob set on my 84 FXSB and hate how it covers the top of the rocker boxes up. I am looking for ideas for how to mount a sportster style tank. I don't really want to cut the factory tank brackets off of the top of the fame in case I want to put the larger tanks back on. Has anyone figured out a way to mount some of the aftermarket "king" size sportster style tanks to a big twin frame?
Thanks!
Thanks!

No. no and hell no, you do not go cutting up intact shovelhead frames, save that **** for the sportster bobbing boy's.
OP you find a tank you want and get busy modifying that to fit not the other way around.

Hahaha just grind off the fatbob mounts, leave the frame intact....
On a side note there is nothing better than cutting up parts that other people find valuable. And making something cool out of it. Twisted, I know with all the bike stuff you know about old bikes(and that killer shovel), cut up a frame or two when you were a kid?

Besides any peanut tank will need tabs mods or additions and the stock frame tabs make good mounting points already.

Thanks for the quick input. The original parts of my bike are all in great shape so I do t want to cut them up. I may want to go back to stock at some point, who knows.
Thanks for the link too. I'm not sure how I missed it because I check the forum pretty regular. My motor is a thing of beauty... I want to show it off proper.

I bought a new shovel back in 1974, when H-D made around 25k bikes a year. They make at least ten times that many bikes nowadays. So it is not the case that shovels were ever plentiful - they were always rare and still are! So I agree, leave the frame as is and buy a modern pattern tank to cut about and make fit. That should offend nobody!

MAN ---- try to find a 3.8 gal tank from a Super Glide from the late '70's it is great and still with some gal space , I found one on Ebay for $100 it will cover up the tube and be narrow enough , it was also used on the early '80's Sportster Roadster . You are right there at the frame change '84 new or old frame ??? that tank just might bolt right up , it is held on by 1 bolt in front and a spring in the back -- simple
