Just bought an 82 FXR and got it running and there's a clunk while idling in the top end. It's not constant it'll clunk then take a minute then clunk again.

 

Are you absolutely sure it's in your top end?? Clunks usually resonate in the cases. There's nothing really to clunk up top except a broken rocker arm but then it wouldn't be sporadic. Try a long handled screwdriver or stethoscope to pin point the noise. A lot of times a wore out compensator will clunk and it sounds like a real bad rod knock. Nice looking FXRS btw. I used to own an '82 FXRS. Nice riding machine. That fuel tank logo doesn't look like it belongs to a 1982. It looks too modern. Was the bike repainted?

 

I think it. Ight have been getting to much full, we dialed the carb in and I haven't heard it again. And the bike was a rattle can respray
