Default What's it worth? 82 FXR

A guy at work is selling a fairly stock looking 82FXR - wondering what you guys think it is worth. He's owned it since 1989, and just got it running again - needed carb work plus other stuff he says.

It's all there, but it's been ridden and shows it's age. He also has some leather bags for it.

He's asking $5000, but I'm thinking $4500 with the bags is where we'll wind up. Sound fair if it runs as good as he says? I'm looking at it Thursday, and he'll let me ride it.

His pictures:

Price is about right if the motors decent, the rest is just details. Regret ever selling my 82 FXR.

If it is ok he won't mind if you have it taken to a knowledgeable shop to check it out. They don't call them troubleheads for nothing (but, I like the two shovels I own anyway). Even if it looks great you can spend thousands getting them mechanically shipshape. That price for a really good FXR is not astronomical.

( if there are any original OEM parts that come with it, even better. )

I second that. It's worth the money for the check. I love the shovels, but had one I bought used which needed a shy+tload of issues...so many that I decided to take a smaller loss by selling it as is.

Price is about right, I would probably try and get him down to $4k even. That bike looks very used and possibly abused. Be careful buyer beware and all of that. Good luck.

Mmmm.. depends where you live
Remind the guys that "nobody likes FXRs"... specially shovel
Over here, that's a $3500, TOPS 4K
I got a complete 1983FXRT for 4200, and 82 FXRS for 2900 and an 85 FXRT (with bags) for 3500...

In what decade ? Any FXR out here starts at $6000 and find a complete RT or RP you're looking at 10 to 12 K easy.

Well, I was hoping it was as sorted out as he said it was. But you know how that goes. First thing he said is the front brake doesn't work - goes right to the grip. Looks like the rubber line is cracked and the brake fluid all leaked out. He said he just spent $1000 getting it fixed up. Poor guy got taken for a ride. But it started right up and idled smooth, but loud. I took it for a ride and it ran pretty good, handled well, everything worked except the horn. When I got back to his house it smelled like burning oil - and there is a puddle starting below the bike. Rear base gasket leaking like a sieve! Looked a little closer and there is a big dent in the gas tank too. I thanked him for letting me ride it but I don't want another project bike. He's getting his knee operated on soon and maybe he'll be able to ride it again.

The 85 last September, the 82 two years ago, the 83 in 2011
I still see deals around here, just have to be patient
The shovel FXRs at 5K plus stay on the market a long time

That lovely seat surely overrides no front brake and base gasket leaks, LOL.
