Never seen such idiocy in my life
What was this person thinking thinking? There appears to be three stake marks punched in the lip of the trans case made by A screwdriver. Were they trying to hold the Seal in tighter? By doing this, it raised three bumps of aluminum on the case where the seal sits. So as you drive the seal in, it gouges the metal and leaks just like the old seal.
So I guess I will very carefully try to file these bumps down.
I might try putting sealant on the seal Before I seat the new one. I don't know.
And to add insult to injury, the trans drain plug was stripped and i had to practically pry it out.

That's much more common on older bikes than you might think , run across many a 4 speed trans that's been done to. Real old school stuff there.
Get the old seal out you can use a sharp edge or an exacto knife and gently take the humps of the seal seating area so you don't damage the new one and a light smear of a sealer like Permatex Ultra Gray on the seal before installing won't hurt. Also a smear over the end of the countershaft where it goes into the case is a good idea too after you clean and degrease it well, that's sometimes a minor leak point that'll make you think the trans seal is going out again.

Great replies and advice, guys! Thx! On shaving the bumps down with a knife a la twizted-great minds think alike. I was going to try that.
The seal I got from JP was a single lip. I ordered another one today and they told me the new one was double lip. That should help.
Johnjz...yeah...thanks, needed that perspective. You are right, it's a gift of an old scooter, so I'll do it up right. This all happened late last night. Goods nights sleep and I'm ready for more fun.
Gotta go to work, though, now...at the ***** factory.

You do know that JUST replacing the seal is VERY unlikely to stop the leak.

Thanks. I'm not a machinist and if i keep the bike will definately put a six speed in it. Along with a magneto and 88 inch sidewinder kit and ride this thing all over the country and never worry about it.
That said, thanks for the reply. I don't mean to sound like an ingrate. If my old neighbor john lived next door (the guy with the bridgeport mill and cicra 1920's lathe) we'd knock it out.
