sumping, check ball.. or maybe not
I need some ideas
1983 FXRT
I am familiar with the problems of shovels sumping and check ***** not sealing
A little over a year ago mine starting puking oil from the breather hose after parking the bike, so I re-set the pump check ball using a new one to lightly tap the pump, and another to replace the old one
It work for a while... then it happened again. I fixed it again the same way and it still does it every once in a while
Today I started the bike to move it 30 feet and turned it off. A tiny stream of oil was coming down from the breather hose.
Turned the bike again and with the bike running the stream was still there. Turned the bike off, still oil... removed the oil tank cap (FXRT) and the stream stopped... maybe just coincidence
Any ideas?

I will be splitting cases next year anyway
About the breather valve... 3 years ago I installed a reed valve after you suggested it
The plastic valve was junk, the bore wasn't too bad, the bike was breathing through the oil tank building pressure. The breed valve helped and worked so far... maybe until now

Rore from Charlotte to Milwaukee for HD 110th anniversary... bike was burning a LOT of oil and by the time I got there, the oil tank was building pressure
I was adding 1 QT of oil every 250 miles
I ride back, get the motor out and take it to an old timer mechanic in the area and tell him what the issues are, to look at it, look at EVERYTHING that needed to be addressed and DO IT since the motor bas out
Get the motor back after 6 months (I was not in a hurry... but this guys is alone and takes FOREVER).. he said I just needed new rings and valve job, that's it
Get it back, put it on the bike, start it and still building pressure. Oil cap would not pop out under pressure, but would move up and down if just siting in place following rpm of the bike and you could hear the air coming out from there
At this point I remove the cam cover and find about the plastic breather gear, write in here and find about the reed valve.

shovel cylinders don't have a good memory like some of the others, and if it gets good and hot they go out of round and don't go back to round when cooled off - the old timer is still thinking they never did that 25 years ago - but the heat cycles over the many years causes that today
pull the top end this winter - in the time left use 70 weight oil and 3/4 of a quart of lucas additive to the 2 quarts of oil in the engine then top it off hot -- see what that does for you
I like ultima 70w oil lots of zink and it hold up well in the heat

Which Lucas additive you are referring to?
