no ****...ever see what happens to a wheel when you don’t get the spacer right? Not pretty. Get the cutting torch out.

Don’t know if this helps or not, but here’s a pic of my 72 coming apart. Here’s what the spacer looks like, anyway. Just order one from JP or somewhere.

Hey Bill thanks for posting. would you be able to tell me what the ID is of your spacer?

Uh....weather is just warming up and getting an FLH wheel off is no easy task. Anyway, I’m not so sure if ID matters. It’s the width and the bearing load that matters. Why do you want to know ID?

gotcha, wasn't sure if the photo was recent or not. I guess ID really wouldn't matter if it's not required to meet the inner bearing races? that's just what I'm having trouble with since my spacer is too small to slip onto the axle. If ID doesn't matter then shouldn't I be able to find something close in diameter and trim the spacer to fit snug in between the left and right side bearings in the hub?

Do not make your own spacer! I repeat: do not make your own spacer! They cost under $20.

I've worked in HD dealerships and I’ve seen what happens to wheels when an incorrect spacer is used. A guy once was going to sturgis and had his wheels serviced prior to the trip. The mechanic left the spacer out entirely. Oops! The wheel generated so much heat that it cooked the entire rear axle. The axle was welded to the hub and the mag wheel got so hot it melted the tire. On my old 72 iron head back in 1981 I didn’t set the end play correctly on the rear wheel or I didn’t torque it to spec. I’ve forgotten. But it seized my axle to the bearing. I had to cut it out with a torch. I saved the hub but lost my pretty chrome axle.

go buy a factory service manual and a spacer.
