Default Lever start in place of starter solenoid.

Anyone running one of the lever start units? Looking for opinions pro or con.

I have one.
It works perfectly.
The biggest drawback I can think of is if the engine stalls in traffic, you need to quickly get the bike in neutral so your left hand is free to operate the lever.
So the lever works great for me but I gotta admit the button is real nice to have if that system is working correctly.
Good luck with whatever you decide to do.

if you add some new USA parts to the system and wire it this way it will work like a real system and will never run on like they are prone to do

Thank you, I like the old school factor and your point about stalling in traffic is one I didn't consider. Thanks for bringing it up.

Went ahead and ordered one.

I'm also using a lever starter (ditto to everything megawatt said). Lever starter will also nullify any idea of going to a true dual exhaust that routes the rear cylinder out the left side.

When the bike is done, will have a Supertrapp 2 in 1, so no true duals problems.

Thanks to all of you for your replies.

Running one as well....... a little tricky to get the springs just right, but doable. Love it..... went through those solenoids, seemed like every year.

It was fun compressing the spring just to get the small pin out of the end of the shaft to get the solenoid out of the way!

Did you have to add any 5/16" washers to the lever start shaft to get the starter gear mesh set?

I believe I did.

One thing I should mention, If while testing it you feel the lever isn't returning all the way to it's home position, try loosening the outer primary cover, and while re-tightening it lift up. I found that my starter gear shaft had a very minor alignment issue that caused the gear to "stick" to the shell gear (those little springs can only do so much). Chased that problem for a while until I figured it out.

My 83 doesn't have the Ford looking solenoid, it has the bosch style starter relay. Did you add that in and if so what is it off?
