Thumbs down 1980 HD FLT Trans upgrade

Talked to the techs at JP Cycles about wanting a 6 speed trans for my FLT and they said Revtech offers 6 speed guts that will fit in the 5 speed case and does not require any other mods JP part number 620-239

Have the same conversation with Baker, it will cost more but will be worth it.

Baker makes a great 6 speed, I put one in my 06 flh 5 years ago, recently got an 81 FLT, most of the guts from the 06 fit the 81. From my experience with 6 speeds and FLT’s I’m saying if you want overdrive change your final sprocket. Also Change the trapdoor, transmission side cover, clutch cable and perch to Twinkie style. I wouldn’t suggest 6 gears.

Number 1...don't buy Revtech anything

Number 2...J&P is going through bankruptcy...don't know that I would order from them.

Number 3 Every one else that carries that part says: We're sorry, this product is currently not in stock and can not be backordered...or Temporarily Unavailable

Number 4...don't buy Revtech anything

EDIT Revtech sells them on ebay

I've had the RevTech 6 speed gear set on my FXRT and have been very happy with it
Just bought another one for the FXRS off ebay, 30$ cheaper than JP with the member discount
I would recommend the set, BUT I had do do a couple of mods:

1-the mainshaft final thickness was off and wouldn't fit the bearing of the inner primary. I found out too late, so was out of warranty, so I machined the bearing inner race and works fine
2-the main gear needed a little grinding to fit all the way in into the tranny case

My 1980 FLH is solid mount with 4 speed. As stated- FLTs are rubber mount with 5 speed. The FLH has the speedo in the tank dash and a bare batwing. FLT has speedo, gauges and radio in the fairing.

Let me re-enforce this message, DO NOT buy anything RevTech. You will not be happy.
