Some good insight in this thread, thanks. I also have a '71 that I'm putting back together. Fortunately, a lot of the original pieces are there and were in decent shape, with the exception of the speedo (85 MPH) version, S&S carb instead of the Bendix, and the exhaust. The first two are fairly easy to source, but I was having trouble with the exhaust.
Here's a link to the Paughco page, if anyone can provide info on which exhausts piece are close, including the muffler as they list different lengths, it would be appreciated.

1972 FX Superglide
I have 1972 FX Superglide in good original condition but it needs to have its exhaust replaced. I have a good muffler but I am really on the lookout for a full set of headers.
Also need an original Superglide sticker that sits on the headlight cover.
So, can anyone help? Know anyone with these two for sale?
Any help would be much appreciated.
I can be found on mg@markgeorge.com
Many thanks,
Mark.

I bought a set of NIB OEM headers with the crossover tube for my ironhead on ebay for darn near nothing some time back. Dig into your parts manual and start googling the p/n and see what pops up. There are also several places that sell old original stock and take off parts here and there. You just have to search. There is/was a guy in St. Louis who advertised on Craigslist a few times. He had tons of stuff. This was a business, not an individual. Try these guys too:

The URL for olddude.com was insecure. That one might not be any good but it's worth a try to call. If you still can't find headers, get ahold of Paughco and see if they have what you want. These won't be original but they're made in the USA.

Decals
If the decals are easy to find on e-bay I would have found them. Original decals are hard to find. Any on e-bay are badly printed copies, using smooth paper instead of having very fine ridges running through the whole decal.
As for chroming pipes, you don’t chrome pipes on a bike unless it is either restored or being restored. It is the height of amateurishness.
Regarding colours, you could custom order colours back then. If the original buyer want sparkling white because he has seen that colour on a ‘71, he could have it. I know because I was riding Harleys back then and I did just that. Plus, if measured, the thickness of the paint on my ‘72 is exactly as it should be. Plus I’ve been riding and building Harleys for 50 years and like anything else in which you become super deeply involved, after so long you get a ‘nose’ for a repaint and this bike has not had one.
Other than any of the above, your advice and information was spot on. Cheers.
