they tried in 2006, but didn't get it right. I wonder if an original seat could be made to fit? Too bad they mounted the tank emblem crooked:

Some good insight in this thread, thanks. I also have a '71 that I'm putting back together. Fortunately, a lot of the original pieces are there and were in decent shape, with the exception of the speedo (85 MPH) version, S&S carb instead of the Bendix, and the exhaust. The first two are fairly easy to source, but I was having trouble with the exhaust.

Here's a link to the Paughco page, if anyone can provide info on which exhausts piece are close, including the muffler as they list different lengths, it would be appreciated.

I just install this exhaust system on my 71 FLH with electric and kickstart.

Paughco 1-3/4″ 38″ Long Staggered Dual Tapered Exhaust System 734TM (includes floorboard adapter), Front Heat Shield 430F, and Rear Heat Shield 422-1R

Thank you. It looks great, however I was looking for the original 2 into 1 setup the Superglide had.

I see you have the three red warning lights and three green indicators on your instrument panel which does answer another question for me.

This one is close but certainly not exact.

Thanks for the link, Oldbie. Close will likely have to do on this one.

The PN I have for the muffler from the parts catalog is #65240-41A. Since the Paughco site lists quite a few lengths on this style of muffler, any help on the correct size would be appreciated.

Default 1972 FX Superglide

I have 1972 FX Superglide in good original condition but it needs to have its exhaust replaced. I have a good muffler but I am really on the lookout for a full set of headers.
Also need an original Superglide sticker that sits on the headlight cover.
So, can anyone help? Know anyone with these two for sale?
Any help would be much appreciated.
I can be found on mg@markgeorge.com

Many thanks,

Mark.

I bought a set of NIB OEM headers with the crossover tube for my ironhead on ebay for darn near nothing some time back. Dig into your parts manual and start googling the p/n and see what pops up. There are also several places that sell old original stock and take off parts here and there. You just have to search. There is/was a guy in St. Louis who advertised on Craigslist a few times. He had tons of stuff. This was a business, not an individual. Try these guys too:

https://www.billscustomcycles.com/index.php

http://www.olddude.com/about.htm

https://tomsnosparts.com/

The URL for olddude.com was insecure. That one might not be any good but it's worth a try to call. If you still can't find headers, get ahold of Paughco and see if they have what you want. These won't be original but they're made in the USA.

The decals are easy to find on eBay. The headers are impossible unless you stumble on an OEM set. Take yours and have any holes repaired and then rechrome them. Your 72 has a 71 Sparkling America paint job. That paint wasn’t available in 72. Someone repainted it to look like a 71.

Default Decals

If the decals are easy to find on e-bay I would have found them. Original decals are hard to find. Any on e-bay are badly printed copies, using smooth paper instead of having very fine ridges running through the whole decal.
As for chroming pipes, you don’t chrome pipes on a bike unless it is either restored or being restored. It is the height of amateurishness.
Regarding colours, you could custom order colours back then. If the original buyer want sparkling white because he has seen that colour on a ‘71, he could have it. I know because I was riding Harleys back then and I did just that. Plus, if measured, the thickness of the paint on my ‘72 is exactly as it should be. Plus I’ve been riding and building Harleys for 50 years and like anything else in which you become super deeply involved, after so long you get a ‘nose’ for a repaint and this bike has not had one.
Other than any of the above, your advice and information was spot on. Cheers.
