Default Correct Part Number for 1972 FLH Mufflers

I am trying to do a spot on correct restoration of a 1972 FLH Shovelhead and I can't tell if the correct muffler part number is 65244-70A or 65242-70B.

Do I need an A and a B for left and right? Which number is correct?

I have also heard that the B might be an ultra quiet version?

Any insights people can provide would be hugely helpful and much appreciated.

My parts book shows only these

65242-70B extra quiet muffler (70-77 FLH)

65242-78B chrome muffler (78-* FLH)

Thanks for the reply. I thought the 242 was the correct one until today when I saw the 244 on eBay. Do you know if I buy two of the Bs? A and B isn't a side of motorcycle thing is it?

Again thanks for checking the parts book.

Part number not visible on the other side just HD MOCO Inc. I seriously doubt there's a different part number as there doesn't appear to be a reason for it. Mufflers are attached via round hangers that slide onto the mufflers so I wouldn't think there is a right or left. Looked in my parts book and confirmed numbers Panz came up with. IMO the B is the extra quiet and you could use either the 65242-70 or the 65244-70 and decide whether you want the standard or extra quiet.

Hi guys
appreciate this is a really old thread...

I stumbled across it the other day searching for similar info and thought others may be interested in what I have

I have a 1972 FLH with a build date of September 1971

it had some aftermarket pipes on it, but came with some original exhaust parts including mufflers

One muffler is a 65244-70B and has an outlet size of 1inch

Other is a 65244-70A and has an outlet size of 1 3/4 inch

They are the same length and have the same diameter inlet I have made the assumption B is for the right side and A is for the left side

I went with a single system and fitted the B muffler and yes, it's quiet

I couldn't find these numbers in the parts book either but they do look like the mufflers in the book

Cheers
