Default 75 FLH Project

The saga continues. S&S Super E. Bike starts and runs great. Goes through the gears like nobody's business. Once I hit highway speeds and ride for around a mile, it starts sputtering like it's running out of fuel. Twist the throttle and response is immediate. Go back to cruising, and the sputtering returns. I dropped jets down to 0.70 main and 0.28 intermediate. It's older carb so the main jet air bleed is fixed. I've used S&S' set up instructions but to no avail. Any thoughts on what to do next? Timing was way off initially and bike would barely start. Reset timing and added new points, condenser, ball bearing flyweights, plugs and wires, true duals with baffled fishtails, if that information will help. Thanks.

Have you checked the petcock screen?

Dropped the jets from what?

.70 .28 are a tad lean if running gas with methanol.

Tom84FXST, 0.74 and I believe 0.34. Old timers disease. I'll have to look in my tool box when I get home. Good point, have had the screen out a couple of times, but you never know. After watching the S&S carb set video for the umpteenth time, I kind suspect I don't have the accelerator pump adjusted correctly. I run ethanol free fuel. Thankfully, a gas station nearby sells the stuff.

to me your low speed jet is glazed over and its no longer a 34 its a 26 or less

pull the bowl unscrew it put it up to the light and look for a color and at the opening size

blow it out and clean it good put it back up to the light and look again - my guess the hole will be bigger then it was before cleaning -- now some of the gas stain will attract a glaze sooner then you would thing be sure its clean before re installing

Not trying to Hijack, Just stating my issues in hopes they help you....

I've been having issues with my 77 with an E carb. The way it was misfiring @idle or cruising I thought for sure it was some where in the ignition. When idling @times the motor would Stall... I've tried 3 different ignition setups, single and dual fire all electronic to no avail.... So i popped the A/C off and watched as it was idling and it appeared that little droplets of fuel were landing in the venturi. weird I thought but upon further investigation it looked as if it was coming out of the accelerator pump nozzle. So I started to mess around with the pump adjusting screw, I turned it all the way in and the idle changed. Odd I thought so I turned it out a full turn and the idle changed again. Currently the pump isn't spraying a good solid squirt no matter where I set the adjustment. Is it possible that the Diaphragm is torn and at idle or other "hg i'm sucking fuel through the accelerator pump causing a very rich condition and making the motor puke at times?
None the less, I ordered a new kit. Hopefully I'll have it by Wednesday...

Had the exact same problem with my 76 FLH with S&S E.
Turned out to be an intake manifold leak.
Start there.
