Have the old cam gear pressed off, and press it on to the new cam shaft. Any shop will know how to do it. Otherwise you risk a gear mismatch, since there were something like 7 gear sizes within each of the early and late types.
if the old one was not noisy, reuse the gear.
If I worry over the gear timing I actually check the timing of the breather in the window to make sure it is within spec - folks will get pretty excited about "exact" breather timing but it is a sloppy deal in my opinion - a little advance on the point of opening is actually better IMHO - at least - this is true of ironheads for sure as I built 100's and those timing gears are effed up sloppy
