Default Slap me...don’t work on the bike when tired!!!

Well after my last idiot episode racepres and Johnjzjz gave some good advice: don’t rush, etc. So Friday night I’m dead tired but really want to work on the bike so idiot me decided to thread an e-z coil insert into my stripped ignition hold down screw in my cam cover. Messed it all up and wound up snapping off the stand-off screw for the ignition plate. Now what? I ordered 5/32 and 11/32 end mills to drill and retap. If I go with a new cam cover, do I have to line-ream the pinion and cam bushings?

be careful... ya gots a genuine slowdown on yer hands now
Cam covers should be line reamed... starting from New Bushings. But, I have replaced them.. with Used, after checking a few things [like the cam clearance without the pinion gear].. Checking pinion alignment is more critical, and therefore more difficult...
Experience Keeps a Dear School..... You know the rest.

5/32 and 11/32 end Mills? Really. 2 lip end cutting? They do cut on side. Are you doing this on a precision mill? You cannot use a endmill in a hand tool unless you have some type of block to act as a drill template.

I don't see any reason why you cannot get the broken piece out of the cam cover.. a properley sized reverse drill bit sould do it...

Dude, that key word for working on these old bitches is...............

PATIENCE

Otherwise bad things happen, often. Stay calm, go slow, walk away if it starts going sideways. Tomorrow is another day. Good luck, seriously.

Yeah, I’m using a mill. I like end mills because they don’t wander around like split-points do.

5/32-113/2 is kind of a big jump,.156-.343. The broken screw is what a #8 or 10? The 8 would be real close to 5/32 and a 10 is real close to 3/16. Not questioning you but just saying check twice cut once.

good spot...I meant 5/32 and 11/64 but got my denominators all catty-wampus. Yeah...really. On a Bridgeport mill...really. Want me to send some pics? Can’t use an end mill in a hand drill....yeah...I know...but thanks for the advice. I like end mills because they don’t wander like a drill bit. And I’ll probably weld-fill the hole and re-tap. And I get to use my new Palmgren cross-feed rotary table.

Not necessary. I have a verticle mill. I just assumed you were doing this on the bike by hand. And not knowing tooling, may have indead ordered 2 Lip end Mills on Amazon.
Obiviously, you know tooling.
I did my Apprenticeship as a toolmaker at NN Shipbuilding years ago. My last year was on a large Pratt and Whitney Jig Bore before moving into management.

I replaced my cam cover on my 76 FLH in a long battle to reduce the whinning noise my motor was making. It did no good, and I ended up replacing the pinion gear.
I have the original 76 FLH cam cover, if your interested. Not sure what a fair price would be.
