Tooling along about 55 and wasn't any real noise at first but it felt like the brakes had come on dragging the bike down fast, big screech then it locked the rear wheel up and I'm fishtailing. Grabbed the clutch and made it to the median strip in the middle of the road. Never found the reason but the timkins overheated and and started welding themselves up. Had a hell of a time unfugging that mess.

Well, that sounds ominous enough that I'll take off the primary cover and clutch and have look.

Only ball bearings on the bike are the mainshaft support in the inner primary and and one inside the trans itself, everything else is barrel or tapered and all those are internal & wheels.

If you can get a small mirror try getting a look up in between the primary and the trans where the sprocket sits , if it's the trans mainshaft support bearing you should see signs of the seal and retainer all jammed up in there. Be sure to pull the battery ground cable if you dive into the primary.

Thanks, Racepres, but wouldn't these ball bearings he's referring to affect the transmission? I'm not worried about the engine but I am worried the tranny could hand grenade itself, which would be bad news because I'm starting to fantasize about hand grenading this thing myself. I'd hate to be deprived of that.

Thanks for the suggestion, Twizted. I'll check it out this weekend and advise my findings.

Are they of a Size used in old Neck Bearings???? [Not yer FX]

Only place I can currently picture Ball bearings is the Primary bearing [on the tranny shaft] and the other end of the main shaft... in the right side of tranny...
Otherwise??? Note that tranny/primary bearings are rather larger than the Neck Bearings ...even on an Old Ironhead..
Now... with a Size reference.... we can probably rule out the tranny/Primary bearings as well....
