For 1971-73 Super Glides there was shift lever #34603-71 (zinc) and shift lever #34604-71 (chrome). Both were short and were originally meant to be positioned as per the picture. As you noted, the shifting pattern was reversed. Some people turned the lever around to get the pattern back to normal but obviously that left a lot of space between the shifter peg and the front of the rider’s boot.
As of 1974 Super Glides there were several changes and it was the first year the shifter set-up passed through the primary covers.
