Default 77 FXE Question

So, I've been thinking about a 77 FXE that I know of. Finally got around to going to look at it today. Bike is in very good condition. Has a couple of small issues that don't worry me, starter does not work and owner said carb (Super E) has problems. I can take care of these issues. Checked the numbers, frame and motor match. After talking for a bit, found out the bike has a "Salvage Title". Apparently it was crashed before the current owner got it and repaired. I'm not sure, nor is the owner exactly was was damaged but, it appears that it was totaled hence the salvage title. Frame is not bent or damaged, I looked real close and the owner has ridden it for many miles with no apparent issues.

The question is, what would the value be with a salvage title? How much of a hit does that cause?

Edit to add: I will have the bike at my place this weekend. I'm going to take care of the starter and carb for him. I'd like to make an offer but, not going to be close the the 10K is thinks it is worth.

Thanks

Well the $10k is out the window for sure. For that kind of money it better be at least 85%-90% the way she left the factory and be clean as a whistle. That is not the bike you are describing at all. But without a picture I admit I am trying to read between the lines. That said, assuming she is a bit of a mess that needs a new owner and a bunch of TLC, with a salvage title, I am around $2k, maybe $3k if she is prettier then I am assuming. $10k is all the money in the world for that vintage bike, salvage title kills that all day long!!! Good luck, pics will get you some more info.

Thanks, I'll have pics to post this weekend.

As I said in the original post, bike is in pretty good shape except the two issues I stated. With those taken care of, definitely ridable. Looks very good. I assume it was repainted but, it was done very well in the original color, grey

Another wise man has often said - it's worth whatever someone is willing to pay for it. Sounds like you want to buy, what are you willing to give? My shovelheads both were ride-able but needed work, and I gave $34-3500 for them.

It depends on what YOU want and willing to pay...seem you want a FXE since there is a 1977 FLH with a factory side car in your area for $10k looks like with matching #s, with clean title and comes with lots of the original parts.

https://tallahassee.craigslist.org/m...848287415.html

For me, I stay away from anything with salvage title. Even you said.... you (and the owner) are not sure what kind of damage....and he wants $10k? Heck I bought my 1971 FLH for $5500.

1977 FXE

Forgot what this one sold for. Pretty much correct sans exhaust and carb (carb is easy part; exhaust is gonna be the most expensive)

Pic of a 1978 FXE that recently sold for 8K

From the pics and description I couldn't see anything not correct other than the seat. Nice survivor that appears almost correct and original with just under 11K on the speedo shiowing.

Bike with a slavage title is worth about $2500-3000.

The bike as you described (no starter, repaint and carb issues that you "know" about), even with a correct HD title would only fetch around $4000-4500 on a good day on the west coast with the right buyer and that's a real stretch.

As you have stated, he 10K asking price for your friends bike is not remotely realistic.

Hey Panz,

Why does this 77 FXE look so much different than the 2 you posted? Tank and gauges are very different.

This is what the one I'm looking at looks like.

^^ That's because ... if it is an FXE, by VIN. someone has dressed it like a FXS [ '77+ Low Rider.]

and.. I thought all the FX's had Kickers in '77... someone liked Chrome so Much thay removed the Kicker cover and installed a chromium Bagger unit..
Yet they Cheaped out on the Exhaust so badly that they got a Crooked Chiwanese item...
Something "different" about those Forward Pegs also...Not Bad... just look different... which ain't always bad.

1977 was the first year for the FXS Lowrider. Only came in gunmetal grey withe large red emblems on 3.5 gal tanks. Also new were Showa forks, flat drag bars on rolled back risers, black krinkle finished cases and barrels, the cone gear case cover was natural aluminum finish as was the primary, highway pegs and the bulbous 2-1 muffler system.

That bike you posted may indeed be a LowRider or as racepres stated, maybe just dressed to look like one. That said it has been customized to a large degree. And yes one of the gapping flaws is the lack of a kicker.

Re: vin numbers

For 1977 HD only made the FX Superglide, FXE Superglides and FXS Low Rider (and before someone jumps on the I am referring to FX series models for 1977 and not HDs total production units of bikes).

FX Superglide start with 2C; FXE Superglide start with 9D and FXS Low Rider start with 2F
