it appears to me that these cylinder walls are still good, looks like some cross hatching remains from previous work. I will measure them out later.
I don't know what the 5B means, but they don't seem to be aftermarket pistons, there are no markings that indicate an oversize piston so... never bored? Just re-honed maybe?

The vin is DC which came back as FLHT
So Someone removed the batwing and put on a Windscreen... and May have replaced the front fender...at least trim as My 1983 FLHTC had "FLHTC" right on the front fender trim... it was a "C" tho..
Easy stuff to do anyway...
While the Short shocks are Not as big a deal on a 5 speed as it is on a 4-speed... I still don't like what can happen to the boots.. chain length is Not part of the equation... clearance is...

If that is enclosed rear chain [should be] better put O.E. Length shocks onto it... or the Chain Boots are gonna suffer destruction... If they have not already...

The only difference between an 83 FLT and FLHT is the fairing...both had the enclosed rear chain....

Hence my statement about the Boots above... relates also to the FXRT early anyway.. I really liked that enclosed chain...so I would protect those Boots, as I have Not seen replacements...

Thanks for the heads up, I'll be sure to investigate that issue.

So it goes to show that when working on an old motor like this one can't simply follow year model specific parts lists.
I ordered a new gasket set for the upper and it came with these valve guides
but what was on the head was these
At some point the valve guides were replaced by guides other than the oem pieces for that model year.

Those arnt valve guides....just valve seals. Need to mock up with retainers and no springs . The new seals are much better than the ines you had as long as they fit and clear. Hell some motors i dont run any....

Your right, i misspoke on the first line of text and should have typed valve guide seals.
However, the cometic seals stand quite a bit taller, and are too large for the bottom valve spring plate to pass over.
so i'm going with what was on there.
I haven't opened the cam chest and pulled the cam to see what it is, so I don't know if these are stock springs or not. Either way, I'm going with the type that were on there.
My goal is to get it running, clean it up and sell it, so I don't want to dig any deeper than I have to.
