Default Crankcase breather for a 72 FLH

Hey guys, my Shovel has no line or filter, just the nipple that comes off the engine. Tired of cleaning up oil after a long sit than start up. Where are you guys running a line and is it to filter? My oil bag is like a softail style so I can't run it into that. LMK, thanks

If I am understanding your question, the crankcase breather hose #5 runs from the oil pump. Here is a diagram of the oil system.

My routing looks like this since I have an oil cooler.

If you will notice, I have no rear chain oiler line #7 (periodically lubricate the chain manually). My crankcase breather hose is not routed to the AC but routed under the bike to the atmosphere using a catch can (not a shovel thing but a safety thing so the vented oil does not find its way under the rear tire.

Thanks for pics. Catch can hmmm do you have a pic?. Was thinking of running a hose and zip tying it to frame so that if it leaked it would drip on chain.

You can check out my thread, posts #589-608 on the discussion of the catch can and pics.

Let's back off just a bit. Are you cleaning up the little bit that drips from the vent or a bunch that has leaked past your oil pump check valve and accumulated in the crankcase?

It’s when it sits a long time (like a year) it will leak 4-6 Oz when start up. After normal running it doesn’t leak when I start it.

Then it is your oil pump check valve.

My evo’s would do the same thing but I had a hose and a breather that bolted near swing arm so it took a while before I’d have to wipe the oil. My shovel has no hose or anything so it just drops straight down on ground. Was planning on fitting a hose and possibly a breather but trying to find a place to lift and fasten so it’s functional and not an eye sore. Been really looking for pics of what guys are doing (except into air filters) and can’t find a thing. Reason why I posted.
Thinking of just putting a hose to nipple and make sure it’s got some length to it and fasten so if it does leak it will drip on chain. That or fit a breather and mount it somewhere ?

They do that after sitting for a long period of time. As long it only does it at the first startup of the season, nothing wrong with the bike. Put a pan under it when you start it the first time, no worries. It really is normal, or the norm maybe is a better way to say it. Good luck.
