My 49 and 65 use the copper mesh. Never oiled them and have had no problems. My 78 and 84 use the foam filter (unoiled and I have had no problems with either bike. Maybe not “stock” but I am the only one who can see it. K&N filter are probably the best on the market. not cheap but a. Worthwhile investment for sure.
I recently picked up a K&N for my Flathead,. bought it from Jerry Greer, came with a spring plate to work with a stock J Slot air cleaner. After a little bit of slicing of the rubber to make it fit, it now installs the same way as the stock mesh and copper filter. Seems the Linkert likes it as well and I fele a bit more protected from the sand. And it was not expensive, give it a look on their website.
