belt drive inner primary...oem pt #?
 

Hi,

I am rebuilding a 78 shovel lowrider. It already has a belt primary and I'm
thinking of converting the final drive to a belt as well.

Does anyone know where I can find the HD oem part # for the inner primary
case and the swingarm on dual belt drive fx's like the sturgis model etc?

I don't believe you will be able to do it. The Frame on the Sturgis model was bowed out at the rear down tube for the rear belt. The Belt Drive inner primaries are: 60502-80A for 80-83 FXB, FXSB; 60502-84 for early 84 FXSB; 60504-84 for late 84 FXSB. Rear fork is 47446-82 for late 82 FXB; 83 later FXSB; 84 FXWG.

You probably have the wrong trany for a rear belt drive I'd stick with the chain

hey there, thanks for the help. It's amazing how once you have a part # you can
find all sorts of parts!

I've already been accused by a couple old timers here of creating a Frankenstein
bike, HA so I'm not too worried about changing or adapting.

A fella near here is sorta fond of the 4 spd and if I replace it with something newer I
can hopefully do what I need in the way of main shaft -and- get rid of one more
leak while I'm at it.

On the side tube of the frame, does anyone know if they were all "bowed out" or not?
If they were, I maybe can find some pics or a bike setup this way already to go by
if I need to do something along those lines to allow more clearance.

And what about the ring gear, I'm thinking there will be issues with the starter and so
on I'm going to run into as well.

Besides the difference in the inner primaries, the starter set up was totally different also. You would have to totally rework the frame, the bowed out rear down tube was also where the swingarm mounts. It would have to done perfectly or it will affect how the bike tracks. It would be easier and cheaper in the long run to sell what you have and buy a dual belt model if that is what you want.

hmmm.....it's a thought.

First thought I have is on vin, (and I apologize in advance if
I ask a "immoral or illegal" question....) Lets say I find a frame
I can buy or swap for.... if I find one do I put my engine etc
in another frame and have a non matching bike, or would it be
better to cut the necks from the bikes and swap the vins so the
frame matches the engine? I mean, is there anything illegal or
good, bad or otherwise about that, and what would be the
advantages and disadvantages about that? And if there's
something "illegal" I would really appreciate a very clear explanation
on that especially, I'm not into hot bikes ATALL.

Other than that issue, I'm sorta intrigued by the idea. My plan
was to first decide on what my goal was, (did that) then find out
what this was going to take before I jumped in with both feet, so
I haven't bought too many parts yet, (which I'm VERY revved up for)

I'll have to find out if my fat bob tanks would be likely to fit the
different model frame.

I already know the oil tank on the bike now is too tall to suit me,
rubs on the bottom of the frame under the seat AND on the
gear selecter lever, so I was hoping to find a horseshoe tank
to replace it with...

Lots of questions to answer before we get started ripping her
from end to end.

it's all cool tho as I have decided this is going to be my project
for the entire winter.

1970 and later bikes, the title goes with the frame. You don't want to be altering VIN numbers or all your work and money will be sitting in some impound lot if it is every checked at a traffic stop. Buy a custom frame with an MSO and get a builders title or buy a Sturgis frame with a title. Check with you local DMV on the rules in your state.

The frames on all FX bikes are the same after 78. The part number is 47013-78C and it covers ALL FX models from 78 to 84 so the story about the frames being different is not true and the starters are all the same also. When you tell me I'm wrong my info came the the HD parts book.

No offense but this thread is16 years old.

Why would I be offended? The constitution is pretty old too, does that mean it doesn't have value in your mind?
