79 fxe tank lift

I am in the process of fabing one up as we speak for a flh. I added 18" bars and polished rockers and the lifted tank would show both off nicely. What a pita. I need to cut out the tank indentions and weld in flat pannels on the inner wall (the backbone runs thru the middle of the tank).
then I will have to reseal it with kreem, red kote or whatever.
why do we do this to ourselves?

If you have fatbobs (2 piece tanks) put spacers in the rear to move it outward away from the rockers. You can space the front also. Before you tighten the tanks down put a piece of card board between the lower front mount and the rocker box. This will keep it off the rockers when you tighten them up. Remove the cardboard after. If you have the one piece tank, it had a stock horseshoe shaped rubber mount that fit between the tank and the backbone of the frame.

This is what I got so far. The front is lifted 4" and the rear is up 1-3/4" By drilling into the cross support on the frame and welding in a sleeve (probably not needed but what the heck, only took another 1/2 hour) I was able to lift the front. I then had to lift the back to clear the frame. All the brackets will be fully removeable to go back to stock. The only thing that can't be reversed is the hole in the frame and thats not a big deal anyway.
I think it gives it nice lines and can't wait to get the motor back.
