Default starter shaft/clutch

67 FLH generator shovel. pretty much all stock.
my electric starter WHIRS.. It has done this before and the bendix gear ( starter clutch gear that goes ON the starter shaft was worn. Replaced it, worked.. not this time! without me SEEING what is happening in there I dunno? any ideas? A buddy told me I should get an old primary and cut it so I can operate that and watch. It seemed to flow in and out. (mesh properly.) if I operated the solenoid or the wishbone looking guide, by hand when it was apart. whatdoya think?

Still sounds like it could be the bendix...what kind did you get? Most of the aftermarket ones are junk right out of the box. You can hold the starter shaft in with a screwdriver with the outer primary off to see whats up.

Look at the shift lever where the solenoid throws the shift collar (part of the starter clutch gear assembly ) I've seen the braze give way so when the solenoid pulls the plunger in to throw the pinion gear out to mesh with the clutch housing ring gear the broken lever does not allow the mesh but the starter turns

Make sure that you disconnect the battery when are fooling around in there with the starter linkage.
If you happen to move the linkage enough to make up the solenoid contacts for the starter motor you will probably not like the result.

Have you tried the solinoid, with power,to see if it's throwing the bendix properly? The other thing you can ck is the roll pis in the shaft through the wishbone. They couldve sheared or dropped out, have they ever been replaced?

megawatt, ooooooouch. Hope you didn't find this out the hard way!

What? There's another way to learn this?
I didn't get bit. I thought I was being careful.
Apparently, I was not.
I learned this lesson many years ago.
