if all connections are good, the starter might need a rebuilt...
take it out and open it up and check for worn out parts

It's dragging the brushes are gone in the starter , Keep trying to use it that way it'll fry it completely and take some other stuff out with it .

The brushes look fine but the bushing in the back of the srarter has a lot of play in it. It might be binding up when it turns over is this a replaceable item or do I have to replace the starter? Thanks

Look closely at the armature where the brushes ride does it look black & burnt ? or have a melted distorted look instead of having clean straight lines ? That bushing is replaceable just have to hunt for a supplier & check the front bearing while your at it .

Armature looks ok has a little discoloration but not real dirty. Guess I'll try to find a bushing or maybe have one made at the machine shop here at work. Thanks gor all the help. Had my ride for 20 plus years haven't had any trouble with her but not bad fot a 30 year old ride safe die free.

JPcycles has all the parts for rebuild. Depending on what you need, it might be "cheaper" to get a new one

But you wont learn as much in the process. Good to know how things work on an old girl like that.

New ones are so cheap and once you buy all the stuff the parts are more than a new starter and you have some work ahead of you .

Check these out , they are a complete replacement and there higher output 1.4KV verse the stock .7 $120 uses the same reduction system as the later model starters spins them pretty good yours would part #70-231 for a picture check the link .

https://www.hdforums.com/forum/elect...wire-help.html

Direct replacement just the starter would be 70-130 for the Prestolite $105 in black 70-131 chrome $130 and 70-138 for the Hitachi type in black $110 70-139 chrome $120 plus shipping .

This is a good place for shovel stuff about as cheap as it gets and I've been buying from them over 20 years now . Has and Ebay store , always call an do a live voice when ordering so they can tell what's in stock or not .

Don't buy anything Accell their stuff has been junk the last few years .
