I have a 1982 FLT shovel. When I hit the starter switch, the starter shrieks like an eagle (sounds like an air impact when removing a wheel lug) and then finally turns the motor over and starts. The sound is getting worse with every start.
I have replaced the starter, solenoid, and battery. I have also had everything apart and the starter shaft and all the gears look good. Any help on what my problem is would be appreciated.

You should have come here before you replaced the starter, solenoid etc....

It sounds like a bad starter drive unit.

Last night I changed the starter drive unit and the old shovel stared perfectly. Thanks a-million Dan.
