Default Found one way to stop the start of the day first gear dreaded "clunk"

Sorry if this may have been discussed. I usually make a swing around in the driveway when I come home and back it into the garage. One day I just drove it in. I discovered when backing out if you hold in the clutch and keep it in until ready to pop it in AND also give it a couple rev's it will go in smooth as butter.
If you don't rev it you got a 50/50 chance it wont clunk. Only thing I can figure the plates must stick and revving releases them.
I use Harley primary oil. Tried several others with no success. I feel synthetics on the clutches is too slippery which I have had a problem slipping.

Clunk is reassuring and endearing. I'd be concerned without it.

I've also noticed that when I start up in my shop, if I pull in the clutch and roll backwards a foot or two it normally eliminates the clunk.

Exactly - isn't it a great feeling to be at a light and you announce to everyone around me they may imminently go? I love that feeling of just dropping my leg onto the shifter and knowing it can handle my ample mass.

Ive put in second first then down into first. Same method on big rigs to get it to go in easier. YMMV

Okay this is interesting. I always back my bike into the garage about 10 feet at the end of the ride. The engine is always off and in neutral and I just roll it backwards.

Every time I start it up for the first time to pull out it slips into first gear as Slick and smooth as "owl s.h.i.t." and you know how Slick that is.

All the rest of the time it is the BIG Clunk.

Sometimes mine goes into gear with no noise at all. I've never really narrowed the conditions down. But, when it does, it makes me wonder if it's actually in gear. So, I upshift, then shift into 1st until I get the endearing clunk. YMMV
