Default Do it yourself cam installation M8

I've done numerous shovel heads but never opened up anything later.
Watched cam installs on EVO's but never done one myself. Tools are not an issue,.. Anyone here done a cam install on an M8 themselves?

About 40 - 50 of them, what's your question?

Do I need a specific cam bearing removal tool for this motor or do I need to fabricate one? That's where I'm most concerned.

Every cam install that I have done, I've printed a copy of the installation instruction from S&S to use as a guide. I was just looking at a guide on the M8 cam install the other day.

While you can use a blind bearing puller available from rent most auto stores, I recommend the proper install tool for pressing in the new bearing. The tool sets the bearing to the proper depth and is a little nicer than beating it in with an old cam and hammer. George's garage should have a tool available next month. Just my two cents on that.

We did a basic overview of the M8 cam install in the following thread https://www.hdforums.com/forum/milwa...ep-w-dyno.html

As far as the inner cam bearing replacement you can use most brands of the Twin Cam tools to remove the bearing from the cases which is simple, however when putting the new bearing in the case you need to make sure you set it to the proper depth. Some TC kits use a driver which allows you to carefully set this. Jims USA is now offering their retrofit kits to upgrade their TC kit for use with M8 engines and as another user noted above George's Garage will have their kit available soon as well.

Thank you everyone. I think I'll order the Jims set so I have it in the tool box, I'm sure this is a piece of cake but I'm nervous at the same time

It is no big deal, just take your time. It is best to cut the old pushrods out as this will save you tons of time that more than covers the cost of the pushrods. The cam bearing tool I use is the SE one from the TC and it works perfect. Putting the new one in is not different than a TC as well, just set it flush with the case, NO magic to it at all. The only thing to be careful on is the alignment of the Cam plate and the oil pump when going back together,
