That there is a big can of worms that has the potential to kill a wallet. My 01 I started with an aggressive cam. Some time later when funds worked out I did the 98" S&S along with all the goodies to make it right. Don't really know the bottom dollar as I had a boatload of other things going into the build but seems it came out to about $2,500 ballpark.

Budget??? Small budget...do cams and get it dyno tuned...bigger budget call hillside and get a 98" setup. If you do the cams yourself anywhere from 100 bucks for used set or up to 300+ depending on what you want plus an install kit with gaskets maybe another 40 or 50 bucks. Check some sponsor websites but I think you can get a bore job and pistons for around 700 then of course you still want some cams to go with it and again a good dyno tune. If you figure on spending 2500 ,like mentioned above , you'll be pretty happy with the results...for awhile. I love spending other people's money

I did S&S 510 chain cams, stock tensioners, cam bearings, V&H True duals, Power Commander 5 with auto tuner for about $3100 Canadian. That is probably about $2500 US but this 88 goes very very veryyyyyyyyyyyy well. That includes the labour I paid to have the cams, tensioners and bearings done. Cheaper if you do it yourself.

I had an indy in Midland, VA install 204 cams, upgraded to hydraulic tensioners, bearings, new oil pump etc. Cost around $1500. Then I took it to Wide Open Cycle in Fredericksburg for Dyno Tune. Runs great and plenty fast enough for me. Call Chad at Wide Open and just tell him how much you want to spend. http://www.wideopencycles.net/index.html

Hillside is in munnsville new york...near Syracuse. He can definitely get a nice running 98" for around 2500...I didn't see anything about head work so without headwork he should be able to build a nice runner. 700 for the bore and pistons, 300 for cams 650 for a dyno tune = 1650. The leaves him about 900 bucks to get gaskets and anything else to make the upgrade. Pretty sure any indy would be able to to that job for very close to 2500. He already has a stage one too. Again I might be wrong but my wife says I think I know everything

A used sporbike off Craigslist is the cheapest way to get more power with an HD. Lower your expections or open your wallet. You can mitigate costs a little by doing some of your own work but you'll have money wrapped up in tools as well. Even then, I've learned some pretty expensive lessons doing my own work.
