Finally getting started on my stereo overhaul!
I want to say thanks to the couple of guys that I’ve been messaging/texting about this for a few weeks now. You’ve all been a tremendous help and are a wealth of knowledge. This is going to be long but should turn out good.
I’ve been working on this for awhile now deciding on what I wanted to do and it’s finally coming together. I started out with Moto 602s in the fairing powered by a JL MX500/4. It sounded great but I wanted more. Originally I wanted to stay with standard coaxials/components but once I was finally able to hear a pro audio system that was setup correctly I knew that’s what I wanted. I think the thing with pro audio is this.... you have to make sure it all works together. When executed properly the system can still give you all the right frequencies. The other thing is the horns. I originally steered clear of them because they seemed to be very harsh. However they were being paralleled with a set of mids and being fed the same amount of power. I guess that could be done with lots of tuning from a DSP but once you hear them being run off their own dedicated amp it’s a no brainer. You can turn them way down to work with the rest of the system and it sounds good. With all that being said here’s my components:
Focal FDP Sport (fairing/lowers in parallel off front channels and lids off rear channels)
Digital Designs D4.60 (horns)
Rockford Fosgate DSR1
Mmats PA601.4 (fairing)
Mmats PA601.4 (lowers)
Digital Designs VO-M6x9 (lids)
Digital Designs VO-B3 (fairing)
Digital Designs VO-B3 (lids)
I’m using the HD vented lower speaker pods, Bad Dad lids and Biketronics brackets. I made some horn brackets for the lids similar to what another member did (I think it was yooperhog) and made my own wiring harnesses for the rear speakers. I plan to cut the fairing horns into the fairing where the mirrors were. I’m still waiting on the Mmats, a painted inner fairing from HD, grills for the fairing tweeters and some bars from Vindikta. Once those come in I’ll be able to get it all put back together and see how she sounds.

Looking great 08FXDL! Eric Clapton's "Tore down, almost level to the ground" comes to mind... ha ha
Regarding the Focal FDP Sport Amp, I thought I might pass on that I am still not getting stereo out of mine. I have checked all wiring and switches. I also temporarily installed the replacement Amp that Pacific Stereo was kind enough to send me to test, but the problem persists - only mono out of all speaker channels.
Bike configuration:
My testing included playing a L/R Channel Test Tone (downloaded from the Focal website) and War's "Low Rider" MP3, both off a USB stick. Results as follow:
I spent many years working as an aircraft manufacturer avionics and electrical systems factory rep so I am really mystified by this amp. I started the email troubleshooting process with the Focal Factory rep but no revelations so far...
I'll let you know if it eventually ends up being an Amp "design feature" or just my screw-up somehow....

I also temporarily installed the replacement Amp that Pacific Stereo was kind enough to send me to test, but the problem persists - only mono out of all speaker channels.
Bike configuration:
- 2017 Ultra Limited
- 6.5 Head Unit with SW load 1.21.2.1
- Arc Moto 602 Speakers in Fairing
- Polk MM652 Speakers in the Tour pack
My testing included playing a L/R Channel Test Tone (downloaded from the Focal website) and War's "Low Rider" MP3, both off a USB stick. Results as follow:
- Focal Amp with front (channel 1&2) and rear (channel 3&4) Amp inputs connected through the Focal supplied standard harness:
- Mono output to all 4 speakers
- Focal Amp with front (channel 1&2) and rear (channel 3&4) inputs connected through the Focal supplied RCA harness and two (front and rear) Biketronics BT355 line levelers:
- Mono output to all 4 speakers
- Focal Amp with only Right front (channel 2) and Right rear (channel 4) inputs connected:
- Playing "Low Rider"
- Mono output to all 4 speakers (weird since there were no Left channel inputs connected to the amp)
- Playing "L/R Test tone":
- While Left channel test tone playing - silent, no test tone sound right side front and rear speakers
- While Right channel test tone playing - test tone sound from right side front and rear speakers
- Playing "Low Rider"
- Bypassed the Amp and connected just the front L & R speakers to the factory speaker harness:
- Normal L and R channel stereo from the front speakers.
