Default HD Heat Deflector

First post on the Forum so be gentle but long time reader for troubleshooting. I have read the other threads about heat deflectors and purchased the HD mid frame deflectors for my 2010 Fatboy. The directions that came with it are freaking awful but I figured it out with a little trial and error. However, that little piece of plastic seems awful close to the engine head. Worried it will melt. Does anyone have any thoughts or good pictures of one that is installed on a softail?

Welcome to the forum, maybe somebody on the Fatboy boards can help out with your situation They do sit rather close particularly on the right side. Here's a suggestion passed along by one of our sponsors, leave the left side off, the right side will act as a "scoop" and help pass the air past the rear cylinder out the other side. You can't see both at one time so the missing is hardly noticed as missing. As soon as it's spring here I'll be giving this a try. Again welcome to the forum.

I did this on my Ultra and it does help, you can feel the heat flowing out the left side. It costs nothing and makes a difference IMO.

Tbagger, thanks for the feedback on the deflectors. I remember putting my gloved hand (left) down by the rear cylinder on a trip. Cruising on the Super slab at posted speed on an August day and my gosh it was like an oven down there. Kel03 I don't know the specifics as to what side but moving air in and out and cooling the engine better is the goal.

Thanks for the responses. Any chance someone could post a good picture of the installed shields?

No exhaust on left, so in affect your taking the heat from the rear cylinder and exhaust heat and channeling out the left side.

They are made out of ABS plastic, so the temp needed to melt them would mean your bike is on fire as you are going down the road. I drilled holes in mine because with them both installed it really never "cooled" the rear cylinder. After drilling the holes, it made a difference.
