Exclamation Strange noise but where is it coming from?

I haven't had my 2010 Street Glide long and i usually ride with a Modular helmet and play my ipod music. Today i wore a Police style helmet and listened to the radio. As i was pulling in the service dept. for the recall on the ABS brake flush i turned off the radio. They finish the recall and i leave with the radio off. I start hearing a noise like someone snapping a small limb, or some pop corn being popped or a small pebble hitting your car windshield several other ways to describe the poping. ??? It wasn't constant and did it in all gears. I never could pinpoint where it was coming from. I don't know the history of the bike and don't know if it has done it from day one of my ownership since i wear the Modular helmet and listen to music. Any ideas???

Ideas? Ride it more often without the sound turned on until either you realise your bike is just making normal sounds, or you can pin down exactly what it is. It is inevitable that swapping helmets and sound sources will both affect what you hear back from the bike itself.

Sorry not to be more helpful but I've never heard anything like that on any of my bikes.

I'll hazard a guess to think about.

Check under the bike and around the front of the frame, see if anything might be hanging down and flipping up and striking something (frame, engine, transmission, etc...). Maybe wind is catching something and causing it to pop against the bike randomly.

Since it isn't constant and you haven't been able to determine a particular area that it is coming from, that's about all I can think of to suggest.

Good luck!

I went on a ride on my Deluxe with a group this am and when i returned i got on my Street Glide and was going to go see my Indy to let him see if he could isolate the sound. Well just like you can't get your cage to do at the dealer what it was doing before you got there, the bike was quite as a mouse with just normal engine, exhaust, and wind noise. No clue why it was there yesterday and not today, Thanks guys.

You mentioned having the ABS brake fluid flush brake recall done. My local dealer where I bought the bike said fluid wouldn't be available until mid March. I'm wondering what others are being told.

Fluid wouldn't be available until March? It's brake fluid, you can get it anywhere.

Exhaust brackets and header bolts for tightness and security would be two of my first ports of call. Both have induced noise not unlike yours on mate's bikes "like a large 'ticking' clock" as it was explained to me.

Either turn up the music or put your full face helmet back on. Problem solved.
