Default A dumb question about changing oil in the spring

This really is a dumb question but if a bike sits all winter, should you change out the oil in the spring? I did an oil change last in September and put about 600 miles on it since then. With a couple of exceptions the bike has sat since then in my garage. Its no more than 50 degrees in there all winter as its attached to my house and is semi heated. Was just wondering.

I change my oil based on mileage. You can change it every year if you like but I do not buy into oil breaking down over a period of only a few months.

I live in South Dakota where bikes can be held hostage by winter for 5 months.

The oil won't go bad just sitting in the bike for that short period; however, many choose to change it out anyway for peace of mind I guess. I don't.

Heat is the nemesis of oil.

600 miles is nothing.

You can change the oil, but you must find oil that hasn't be sitting in the can for more that two weeks.

I change each fall to make sure I have fresh oil in the engine/primary/trans.... check for levels and leaks in spring, and head out.

A lot of people here love to waste money. Oil change every 5,000 Miles. Primary and transmission every 10K according to manual. I use to change it every season but now I follow the manual. Cars are like every 3,500? Would you change the oil before that? I don’t see why motorcycles are any different. Some people put more than 5k a year on their bikes, for them changing out all fluids once a year is needed.

No need to change your oil with just 600 or so miles on it.

Evil, but very Funny! But you may have inadvertantly given Big Oil the idea to put “Best by Dates” on their cans/jugs to suck in the clueless masses.
