Default Helmet discussion

I searched and found nothing so now you guys are up...

First bike, first helmet. I will be riding a touring bike, sometimes two up, for long distances.

I'd like to be able to use either the supplied HD Mic kit or go Bluetooth.

Does that mean I can't have a half helmet?

I'm torn between a modular full face or just a half. I can't afford both. I'd prefer the half, but like I mentioned, I'd like the voice/listen capability.

My home riding area is almost year round with summer temps hitting over 110 and winter not getting much colder than 30. That's a big range and I don't see myself riding at the colder extreme.

So what are your recommendations?

I just bought two Hawk modular blue tooth helmets on eBay for a good price. They fit all my requirements.

My recommendation is to learn to ride and get a few seasons under your belt before jumping into distractions like cell phones, especially since your first bike a touring bike which can be a handful by itself.

Never by a helmet online. There is a lot more to it than size. The shape of the helmet has to much the shape of your head. You need to try helmets on. What is perfect for one guy is terrible for the next. My current helmet fits me better and is more comfortable than any helmet I have ever had. I started riding in the late 80's.

I had a Bluetooth setup for a short time a few years ago and ultimately got rid of it because it was distracting.

If you are dead set on going that way, look at Nolan helmets. They have a good reputation and have several models with built in communication systems. Not cheap though.

For the two of us it's been half helmets for warmer rides and 3/4 helmets the rest of the time. Bell Pit Boss is my favorite hh. Shoei J Cruise is our 3/4 lid. We're currently getting our coms updated to the WHIM and using 20S Bluetooth headsets.

We buy our helmets online from vendors who allow multiple purchases and returns. We try them for size and overall fit. Might not work for everyone, but we live far from any decent selection of helmets aside from the local Honda dealer.
