Burping the fuel tank.

Burping the fuel tank.
I've owned my '13 CVO Ultra since it was new.
My riding partner owned a '10 UC up until he bought a Tri-Glide early this spring.
His friend told him that on his '12 UC, he could "burp" the tank after filling it to he top and he could add more gas as the fuel level dropped in the tank.
Today, I was fueling my bike and it wasn't a very busy day at the station so I tried the "burping" thing by gently shaking the handlebars and I got over 2/10ths (I think I could have added more) of a gallon of gas into the tank by doing this.
This probably doesn't mean much to most riders but for those who live in rural areas or take long trips through rural areas, this could add another 12-15 miles (or so) per tank of fuel and it could make the difference in reaching the next fuel stop or walking to get gas!

I do it all the time on my 2018 Fat Bob. That bike has a small (3 1/2 gallon) fuel tank, so I like to get it as full as possible. Once the tank is full to the middle of the filler neck, I can rock the bike gently and it will "burp" and drop the level. I do this two or three times and get an extra 1/4 gallon or so in.
As you say - it means an extra 10-15 miles or so and only takes about 20 seconds.
The other thing I am going to try when I have the tank off is to drill a small hole right at the top of the filler neck so the tank will equalise faster and hopefully hold a little more gas.

I do this all the time. I don't pay much attention to how much more I can get in, but I too feel the few extra tenths could make a difference between walking/waiting and getting to next fuel stop. I get **** about my fuel usage and mileage. As you may well know, I highly recommend a fuel app and track your fuel usage. I think everyone ought to know what their tank holds and their mileage....better travel if you know what you've got!
But regardless, yes I burb.

Burping the tank is something I have always done. A huge pain getting my new bike topped off, having to rock it and takes me some time to get it full. But I can get about a half gallon in it. Hard to get an accurate mileage reading IMO otherwise. This new bike is the hardest to get full of any bike I have had.

I've ridden solo through there and the OK "panhandle", and it was fairly desolate but I didn't burp the tank on my Beemer. I was on my way to a BMW Rally in Red River, NM. Nice ride. I'm not gonna argue too hard about the "100 miles" out there.
