I'm confused
The bike I just picked up was sold to the previous owner as a low rider, and it sure looks that way to me. However the VIN starts in 9D which decodes as FXE. The title also states FXE. So I have a few possibilities. Assuming that my googling is correct, the 9D is superglide, and the title follows.
1. The bike is a FXE and the first owner spent some $$$ to make it look like a low rider
2. The bike is a low rider, and the wonderful QA of the AMF era mis-stamped the VIN as 9D instead of 2F
Anyway to verify which is the case? Seems crazy that someone in the late 70s would have bought the different wheels and changed the center tank gauges etc vs just buying a low rider to start with. Any areas of which a picture would help?
thanks

Doubtful the incorrect number was stamped at the factory. Also, I thought the frame and engine both had the same numbers stamped on them- from 1970-1980, if the bike is all original, the frame and engine numbers should match. . What year model is it? First production year was 1977 for the FXS. Too much on yours doesn’t look like an FXS. Oil reservoir on the right vs. battery box. Front wheel has single disc vs. dual. Forward controls vs. mid. Front fender not correct as well as rear shocks, rear fender struts and handlebars. All comparisons based on 77-79 year model.
Either way, FXE or FXS, nice find!

In any case I can't complain - rides great, sounds wonderful (python pipes I'm told). The only harleys I came across for less were either in baskets, or some ironheads, and this was less than many of the used sportys around.
