Default Idle bike with no primary

Hey everyone,

Ive come across a seller listing a 96 xl1200 w/ 45k miles. However, one of the problems with the bike is that the transmission needs a new first gear and he has since removed the whole primary. Now the price reflects that condition, and I'm willing to take a bike with a broken transmission. However, I am worried about hidden problems. If I could just gear the engine idle, that would reassure me a lot. So I ask, is this even possible? I don't know enough about these systems to know if it can be done without causing damage.

Regards,
Omar

With everything in the primary off you cannot start it.

Gamble time!

No, simply can't be done, unfortunately. The starter turns the clutch and primary chain, hence crankshaft - no way around that!

I wouldn't touch that bike for anything more then $500.00, and it better be gorgeous to get that much out of me. If she has been sitting in a garage in pieces for years, I would take a pass for anything over $100, with a clear title. Good luck.

You said this is one of the problems. What are the others? Also transmissions can be very expensive to fix.

Seller claims, it has been sitting for a year since he took out the primary and that it was running before. Also claims that if I downpay $1000, he will get it rideable for a total of $3000. As is for $1000

Minor things. Rear brake not working. Rear brake light not working. Stuff that I can handle.
