Can I make my mags lighter?
Okay, so this might be one of the dumbest questions on hd forums, but here goes:
I want to make my beloved 2001 FXDX lighter, but on a budget.
And I prefer the look of mags, so is it possible to grind away material from my 13 spoke mags?
(i.e. the inner lip of each spoke)
or, to drill several holes in the spoke itself?
I may be setting myself up for a bad fall, but I had to ask.
Thanks.

You would have to do some serious grinding and drilling to get much. Pretty sure if the could have less metal and still be strong the Mfg would have done it, to save money.

The heavy hitters I found on my 99 (same frame) were the battery, brake rotors, and passenger peg mounts...as well as the fender struts, but that's no small mod. I won't lie to ya, adding lightness isn't cheap or easy. I have a light seat, lithium battery, no tins, no gauges, small signals, lighter shocks. Light rotors and sprocket, stripped down wire harness, lighter trees, lighter wheels, etc. I'm down to about 590 wet. Planning an aluminum swingarm this winter. That should save another 10 pounds or so.

Weight reduction =$
you up have to understand when it comes to weight shaving someone has to design something that performs the same or better than what it is replacing. It’s a very small market so the people who want it know it will come at a cost.
To to answer your question in one word, DONT

The majority of my weight came from those few items I mentioned above. The brakes and battery were worth about 25 pounds.

Looks very nice!! I especially like the bearing spacer to shield stem bearing from the elements and the DIY cast neck grommets
I have told many friends in the past doing large restoration projects to slow down and enjoy the build. It seems you are doing that and we are enjoying seeing you do just that.. Great job!!
