Advice needed on top end rebuild
Hello Everyone,
I have a 1998 Evo Wide glide with 130k miles that needs a top end rebuild. I'm planning on attempting myself and am looking for advice. I have a manual. I have replacement Axtell cylendars with preinstalled pistons. ..85CI. the heads i'll send out for whatever rebuild it needs. would like to check out the cam condition. It's got an Andrews EV27 with Screamin Eagle adjustable pushrods. Screamin Eagle slip on mufflers. I'm an HVAC Mechanic so I'm not unfamiliar with tools etc. My question is tips getting it apart/back together with timing set up correctly and pushrods adjusted correctly etc.
Any suggestions appreciated

Is the manual a Factory service manual or as referred to here as FSM.
With out trying to figure out some specific questions you might have Spanners has a sticky at the top of the page that you might find very helpful.

For starters get a FSM and for your first time follow it by the book.. If you run into problems then post up.. There are a lot of guys here that are always around to help.. Even though you are using Axtell cylinders and pistons, the procedure is still the same.. You must confirm before assembly the ring end gaps... Go by what Axtell says because of the Cast Iron Cylinders.... Do yourself a flavor and use the Cometic top end gasket kit with a .030" head gasket... MLS is the way to go... Good luck...

I went with the flat top pistons. its 85 ci overbore so I've got to get something done to the heads. Zippers says they can make the heads work. I don't need a hot rod. a little quicker will be nice. With a 5 speed, keeping up with bigger motor 6 speed guys are tough. they're geared to cruise at 90 it seems. they've all passed me like I'm standing still. lol
